Yaz Birth Control Linked to Gallbladder Disease in Women

Introduction to Yaz’s Health Risks

We have previously discussed some of the life-threatening risks associated with the use of the popular birth control medication Yaz. Those include serious blood clots in the leg that can break free and travel to the heart or the brain through the bloodstream. In its new location, the blood clot can cause heart attacks or strokes within its victims.

To date, over 10,000 women have filed a lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Yaz’s manufacturer, claiming that the company either knew or should have known of the serious risks associated with the drug and failed to warn consumers of these dangers. To redress these claims, Bayer has set aside $1 billion to compensate women who have suffered Yaz’s side effects and the families of those women who were killed by the defective drug.

Expanded Dangers of Yaz: Gallbladder Disease

As recently as March 2013, Bayer announced that it would set aside $24 million to compensate women who experienced gallbladder disease following their use of Yaz. Researchers believe that the higher occurrence of gallbladder disease is due to Yaz’s use of a new type of the hormone progestin.

The exact correlation between Yaz and gallbladder disease is still unknown. Some researchers believe that the desogestrel (like NuvaRing and Yaz) causes an increase in the level of cholesterol produced by the body, which leads to a buildup of calcified bits of the excess cholesterol in the gallbladder.

Settlements for Gallbladder Claims

Of the $24 million Bayer has set aside to settle claims by the approximately 8,000 women who have filed lawsuits alleging gallbladder problems after using Yaz birth control, Bayer intends to pay $3000 to women who have had to undergo surgery to remove their bladder, and $2000 to women who suffered gallbladder disease without surgery.

If you have suffered from any of these serious side effects following the use of Yaz, or if you have lost a loved one as a result of using Yaz, you may be left with a laundry list of questions.
